Nor'easter slams New York and New Jersey: one person killed
RH
A severe weekend storm raging along the US northeast coast has negatively affected the lives of tens of millions of people. Powerful northeasterly winds have brought dangerous flooding and torrential rain to major cities like New York and Boston. New York and New Jersey have officially declared a state of emergency over the dire situation. In New York's Brooklyn borough, a building maintenance worker was killed when a tree fell during search efforts.
"Postxronika.az" reports, citing the BBC, that more than 160,000 homes have been left without power due to the severe weather. Chaos in the transportation system has led to thousands of flights being delayed or canceled. Mass sporting events have also been postponed as the sharp rise in wind speeds has created safety risks. City authorities have advised residents not to go outside unless necessary and to avoid flooded roads.
Numerous coastal settlements and pieces of infrastructure have been submerged under floodwaters. Experts say the full moon phase has raised sea levels, further worsening the consequences. Emergency services are continuously carrying out recovery efforts in affected areas. While meteorologists predict the wind will ease in the coming hours, they stress that the flood risk remains high.
