First contact after Trump's threat: US-Iran talks resume
RHAlthough a three-hour meeting was held in New York between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, no preliminary agreement was reached between the sides. Mediated by Qatar, this contact went down in history as the first direct dialogue since the ceasefire broke down in June.
"Postxronika.az" reports, citing the BBC, that the talks coincided with the day White House chief Donald Trump, speaking from the UN podium, issued threats of "annihilation" against Tehran and declared a "peace through strength" strategy. While US officials claim the discussions were productive, the Iranian side demanded that Washington immediately end its aggressive actions.
The military confrontation that began in February, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's energy passes, caused sharp fluctuations in global markets. Trump, facing domestic pressure ahead of the midterm elections in November, said he believes a final deal with the Islamic Republic will come together right after the vote.
